It’s a tricky one for tattooists to manage though, and it is difficult to say for sure where responsibility begins and ends. Legally tattooists are free to tattoo any design they like onto anyone who is legally of tattooing age. But surely, as professionals, there an ethical responsibility to conduct their business in such a way that does not harm their clients or the tattoo industry itself. Hand, face and neck tattoos on teenage clients are becoming increasingly common and even a staunch tattoo advocate like myself will raise an eyebrow when I see these ‘everlasting job stoppers’. It has taken years to educate the uninitiated and to alleviate some of the historical stereotypes and prejudices regarding tattooing. Surely now is not the time to start letting the side down. Is it not up to the professionals to advise and vet their clients with one eye always on their own moral compass? After all, tattoos are for life and that’s a lot of Karma to consider.
