We have talked before about choosing a tattoo, We had the art or meaningful tattoo question.  For those looking for a meaningful tattoo often find it hard to get the perfect one.

Here at Vida Loca Tattoo Bolton, we want to help with questions like.. What are meaningful tattoo symbols? What are the tattoos with meaning for men? What are meaningful tattoos for family? Or even meaningful tattoos for life.

In this Blog we look at tattoo symbols and their meaning.  So if you are looking for a tattoo that will have the same meaning in 10, 20 or even 50 years time.  We have you covered!

Tattoo Symbols, what they mean and why.

We will start with a favourite, the meaning for the semicolon tattoo

Semicolon Tattoo

Like when it is used in a sentence, the semicolon is unique in that it means, not to end a sentence, a pause, stronger than a comma but not as final as a full stop. This tattoo has been extremely popular of late since the formation of project semicolon in 2015.

The is a symbol of hope and support, more importantly for those with mental health problems, anxiety, self harm or suicidal thoughts is a expression of survival.

Quotation Tattoo

As far as tattoo symbolism is concerned, the quotation marks are very simple but effect.  When they surround text, its a quote. But when there are quotation marks with nothing between them, this means that the life is unscripted.

You may make your own association with them, for example writers may have them for “all the words you didnt say”

Question Mark Tattoo

Whether you have a question mark on finger…on the arm.. Or where ever else you may want it.

Often the punctuation we use at the end of a question, this particular symbol is often tattooed on the thinkers in this world, people that question things or have a critical approach to problems.

Plus Sign

With this sign, we should smile.  It does not hold the same meaning as a math problem but highlights to live life with positivity.

Ellipsis

These three dots in a row bring the symbolism of a continuation.  Much like in a text… or a blog… or… as you can see, it helps bridge to the next thing.  But as a tattoo this is a representation of continuing or infinity.

Infinity Symbol

This looks like a little stretched number 8 put on its side.  It simply represents infinity or eternity in the world of tattoo.

Equal Sign

This is a very popular symbol as it now embodies gay right generally in advocacy of gay marriage.  Though, be careful as you may get someone who just loves math getting this symbol.

Dash

The dash or hyphen as we know it.  Or that part that's in between the Jay and the Z in Jay-Z.  As a tattoo this represents a flow of consciousness or a jump from one idea to another.

Exclamation Point

When we use an exclamation mark in a sentence its to emphasise or add excitement. Like, “Look at my new tattoo!!”.  The meaning as a tattoo though represents enthusiasm for life or exciting personality.

When it comes to symbolism for tattoo, these are just guides.  For each individual a tattoo can be art or something that is very personal.  Punctuation and math symbols are often a go to for peoples first tattoo and they make great designs.
